Hi, this is Beverly and Dr. Ronnie Weinstein of Ageless Yoga Oak Island with our weekly wellness article. The article talks about how “good” bacteria in your gut thrives on green leafy vegetables 🙂
A critical discovery that bacteria feed on an unusual sugar molecule found in leafy green vegetables could provide an important insight into how “good” bacteria protect our gut and promote health. The finding, published in Nature Chemical Biology, suggests that leafy greens are essential for feeding good gut bacteria. Researchers from Melbourne and the UK identified a previously unknown enzyme used by bacteria, fungi, and other organisms to feed on the unusual but abundant sugar sulfoquinovose—SQ for short—found in green vegetables.

Hi, this is Beverly and Dr. Ronnie Weinstein of Ageless Yoga Oak Island with our weekly wellness article. The article talks about that regardless of mercury content, seafood may help reduce Alzheimer’s risk 🙂
Seafood, a source of essential fatty acids, is often celebrated for its health benefits; but it can also contain mercury, a chemical known to increase the risk of brain disorders. So, is seafood really healthy for you? A group of researchers may have put this fishy conundrum to bed—at least for people with a genetically increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease.

Hi, this is Beverly and Ronnie Weinstein of Ageless Yoga Oak Island & we found this great article to share. The article talks about gluten-free diet & athletic performance. Pass it on to a friend 🙂
The gluten-free diet is swelling in popularity with athletes: A study from last year found that out of nearly 1,000 competitive athletes in Australia, 41% were following a gluten-free diet. This could be because some athletes experience bloating and other gastrointestinal symptoms during and after exercise, and believe that eliminating gluten from their diet will help. But does a gluten-free diet really make a difference? A new first-of-its-kind study reports that, at least in the absence of pre-existing gluten-related health problems, it may not.

Hi, this is Beverly and Ronnie Weinstein of Ageless Yoga Oak Island & we found this great article to share. The article talks about how Omega-3’s improve learning in children. Pass it on to a friend 🙂
Every parent wants their child to do their best in school, and new findings suggest that upping their omega-3 intake could help them do just that. The findings, published in the journal Nutrients, suggest that adolescents with a higher Omega-3 Index (the amount of omega-3 fats relative to total fat in red blood cells) may process information faster. The study was part of a larger randomized trial on the effects of omega-3 fats on cognitive function, mental well-being, and academic achievement in teens, called Food2Learn.

Hi, this is Beverly and Ronnie Weinstein of Ageless Yoga Oak Island & we found this great article to share. The article talks about the best diets for 2016. Pass it on to a friend 🙂
One of the hardest things about starting a new diet can be deciding which one you want to follow. To give you a leg up, U.S. News & World Report has served up their annual list of the best diets for 2016. This year, the DASH diet took the crown again for the “best overall diet.” However, since the DASH diet won’t meet every person’s health and fitness goals, they evaluated 37 other popular diets and identified which diets are best for weight loss, heart health, and other goals.

Hi, this is Beverly and Ronnie Weinstein of Ageless Yoga Oak Island & we found this great article to share. The article talks about how meditation may change DNA for the better. Pass it on to a friend 🙂
If you’ve ever wanted to start a meditation practice, but just haven’t worked up the motivation, here’s another reason to give it a go: a new study has found that both Transcendental Meditation—a form of meditation using mantras —and lifestyle modifications can help lower blood pressure and contribute to DNA changes associated with better health. Published in the journal PLOS ONE, the study included 48 African-Americans with high blood pressure. Because African Americans tend to have disproportionately high rates of cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure, researchers were interested in ways to address these health concerns.

New research may give you hope if you’ve forgotten to put on sunscreen a few times in your life. Researchers have found that cocoa flavanols may help improve and combat photo-aging—skin damage caused by sun exposure. The study was published in the Journal of Nutrition and included 62 women from Korea who were between the ages of 43 and 86 and had visible facial wrinkles.

Hi, this is Beverly and Ronnie Weinstein of Ageless Yoga Oak Island & we found this great article to share. The article talks about how energy drinks can influence blood pressure. Pass it on to a friend 🙂
Energy drinks may boost more than just your energy. Findings from a new pilot study suggest that these liquid pick-me-ups may quickly raise blood pressure and norepinephrine levels (norepinephrine is a “fight or flight” stress hormone). The findings of the study were reported in the journal JAMA. The study involved 25 healthy men and women who were over 18, non-smokers, and not taking any medications. The participants were assigned to consume a 16-ounce energy drink or a 16-ounce placebo drink over a five-minute period.

Hi, this is Beverly and Ronnie Weinstein of Ageless Yoga Oak Island & we found this great article to share. The article puts into context the recent supplement study and emergency room visits. Pass it on to a friend 🙂
A new study, reported on by USA Today and published in the New England Journal of Medicine, has found that each year around 23,000 emergency room (ER) visits can be attributed to adverse events from dietary supplements. This number was based on data from 63 emergency room departments from 2004 through 2013. However, data from the FDA paints a different picture: the FDA reports, for example, that there were only 3,249 adverse events associated with supplement use in 2012. Regardless, even if the 23,000 figure is accurate, the Council for Responsible Nutrition (a leading trade association representing dietary supplement manufacturers) emphasizes the need to view that number with caution, stating: “context is key to analyzing results of the new study.”

Hi, this is Beverly and Ronnie Weinstein of Ageless Yoga Oak Island & we found this great article to share. The article talks about finding less pesticides in organic foods. Pass it on to a friend 🙂
New research supports the old adage, you are what you eat—specifically, as it applies to your kids. A new study has found that children who eat an organic diet have lower levels of pesticides in their bodies. The study, published in Environmental Health Perspectives, included 40 Mexican-American children, aged three to six. Half of the children lived in an urban setting and half lived in agricultural communities. Researchers placed the children on a 16 day diet: they ate conventionally grown food for the first 4 days, organic food for the next 7 days, and conventionally grown food for the remaining 5 days. Researchers tested the children’s urine throughout the study for metabolites of various commonly used pesticides.
