Hi, this is Beverly and Dr. Ronnie Weinstein of Ageless Yoga Oak Island with our weekly wellness article.  The article talks about how water may be the better choice for kids and teens over sports drinks for re-hydration.

Do your kids and teens like sports drinks—those brilliantly-colored beverages that promise re-hydration, calorie replenishment, and electrolyte replacement? If they do, be aware: The Washington Post reports that while these drinks may offer some benefits for elite athletes, who train vigorously and sweat profusely, the younger set doesn’t need them. If they do lose electrolytes from sweating, less common in the types of athletics done by kids and teens, it’s typically a loss of sodium, which is already plentiful in the American diet. For this reason, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that sports drinks for kids and adolescents be avoided, or at a minimum restricted, and that water should be the drink of choice. Sports drinks may even be bad for children due to the sugar and chemical content that rivals amounts found in soda.

You’ve probably heard that sitting all day isn’t the best thing for your health. Yet, if you’re one of the many who work in an office, sitting all day is probably a fact of life. While it’s quite a dilemma, new research may throw you a life raft: Researchers have found that getting at least 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise every week could mitigate the effects of being mostly sedentary. The study was published in the journal BMC Public Health and looked at data from 2,131 adults, age 18 or older, who participated in the 2008 Health Survey for England.

FA new study published in the journal Nutrition Research suggests that an extract of the herb A. spathulifolius Maxim may help those struggling with obesity to lose weight. Previous research has linked the herb, which is native to Korea, Japan, and China, to anti-obesity effects in animals. To test how this herb affects humans, the double-blind study included 43 Korean adults, age 20 and older, who were obese.

Low-carb, higher-fat diets, like the Paleo diet, have gained popularity over the last 20 years. However, a new animal study has found that these diets may tip your scale in the wrong direction and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. Published in the journal Nutrition & Diabetes, the study included 18 pre-diabetic, obese mice.
